The Wyoming Department of Education was awarded a State Personnel Development Grant (SPDG) by the U.S Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). This grant is funded for five years (2006-2011) and is the second such grant awarded the WDE/Special Programs Unit for personnel development. The first being the Wyoming State Improvement Grant (WySIG) that was awarded in 2001.
The purpose of the SPDG is to assist state education agencies in reforming and improving their systems for personnel preparation and professional development in early intervention, educational, and transition services in order to improve results for ALL students.
In Wyoming, this grant will be used to support the Response to Intervention (RTI) and the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Initiatives statewide. These initiatives are aimed at improving the academic and functional outcomes for all students, including students with disabilities ages three through twenty-one.
The SPDG has four goals:
Goal 1: K-12 schools will use scientifically-based instructional and behavioral interventions and practices through implementation of RTI and PBIS processes.
Goal 2: Preschools will use scientifically-based instructional and behavioral interventions and practices through the implementation of RTI and PBIS (Preschool).
Goal 3: Increase the number of available professionals with knowledge and skills for working with students with diverse learning needs (Pre-service).
Goal 4: Families and students will be knowledgeable about, involved in, and satisfied with the instructional and behavioral interventions and practices related to RTI and PBIS (Parent/Family).
Specifically, the funding will allow the Wyoming Department of Education to expand the current RTI and PBIS initiatives statewide, across all grade levels in an integrated manner that promotes systemic school reform aligned with the State Performance Plan and other state activities aimed at positive outcomes for students with disabilities.
