Visual Strategies:
The Key to Improving Communication, Behavior and Social Skills
Linda Hodgdon M.Ed., CCC-SLP Speech Pathologist, Consultant for Autism and Related Disabilities
Communication challenges are a defining feature of Autism Spectrum Disorders and many students with related learning needs, multi-disabled and deaf-blind. The social skill and behavior difficulties demonstrated by these individuals are frequently related to their communication problems. While it is common for educational programming to focus on enhancing expressive communication, comparatively little attention is directed toward supporting the student’s ability to understand. This program will demonstrate why an inability to effectively take in and process information can be a significant factor in the student’s inability to participate successfully. It will define the need, discuss training, and demonstrate many practical ideas for school and home.
